Location: Near Warm Springs, Oregon - Status: Abandoned Railroad: Oregon Trunk - Years: 1910-1928 Photo date: 9/2002 A very interesting and easily accessable railroad tunnel that is located right off of the main road. See my Oregon Trunk RR page for more info. |
Location: Boyleston, WA - Status: Abandoned Railroad: CMSP - Years: 1910-1980 Photo date: 6/2003 A long tunnel that is open and accessable, but located on U.S. Army property. Permission to enter required. More info on my Wash. Cascades Trip page. |
Location: Washington - Status: Abandoned Railroad: Great Northern - Years: 1900-1929 Photo date: 6/2003 The famous Cascade tunnel, over 2 miles long. Open to the public. This tunnel was abandoned when the current 8 mile long tunnel was built. More info on my Wash Cascades Trip page. |
Location: Washington - Status: Abandoned Railroad: Great Northern - Years: 1910-1929 Photo date: 6/2003 The famous Northern Pacific concrete snowshed. Over 1/2 mile long. Near the above tunnel. This was the result of a huge disaster that 96 people. More info on my Wash Cascades Trip page. |
Location: Oxbow, Oregon - Status: Abandoned Railroad: Oregon Washington Railroad Navigation - Years: 1910- approx. 1960s Photo date: 5/2003 A tunnel used by the above RR to reach the Homestead mines and later used to build the Oxbow dam, near Oxbow, Oregon. The first picture shows the remains of the bridge that crossed a large creek north of the tunnel. More info on my Lower Hells Canyon Trip. |
Location: Northwest Oregon - Status: Collasped Railroad: Kerry Logging - Years: 1912-1930s Photo date: 3/2003 This is all that remains of the very historic Kerry Logging Railroad tunnel. It was abandoned in the early 1930s, when a forest fire burned some of the bridges. The collasped a few decades later. The picture on the right shows how it looked in the very spot pictured on the left when it was active. Check out my Kerry Logging Railroad Page. |
Location: Plymouth, WA - Status: Abandoned Railroad: SP&S - Years: 1907-1951 Photo date: 8/2004 This tunnel and a few miles of RR are all that remain of a 38 mile stretch of line that had to be relocated when the McNary Dam was built in the early 1950s. Also known as the the St. Paul Pass Tunnel is about 1.5 miles long and passes directly under the Idaho/Montana border and the continental divide. Pictures are of the south Idaho portal. Location: Marble Creek, ID - Status: Abandoned Railroad: unknown - Years: Prior to early 1920s Photo date: 8/2004 One of two mysterious RR tunnels located near Marble Creek, ID. We were only able to find this one. Abandoned sometime prior to 1922, it was later used by the forest service as a pack trail tunnel before a real road up Marble Creek was built.
